A newspaper’s front page, also known as the main page, or sometimes just page 1, usually contains the biggest stories of the day. Often it teases other interesting stories inside the paper.
In 2014 three Jane Does alleged that they were sex trafficked as minors and that their traffickers used Backpage to post ads for them. They sued claiming that Backpage was facilitating prostitution and human trafficking. The complaint alleged that Backpage substantially changed one ad connected to the three Jane Does, removing their names, and rewording to suggest they were adults. Backpage argued that the changes did not constitute substantial change and were protected under CDA Section 230.
The court agreed, finding that the edits did constitute a substantial change and that Section 230 protection no longer applied. The three women’s case continues.
